As part of efforts to enhance cleanliness and lessen floods, Accra Mayor Michael Kpakpo Allotey has launched a GH¢200 prize program for locals who show proof of rubbish being dumped into gutters.
The Mayor has proposed a GH¢200 incentive for those who can provide photos of persons polluting public areas or throwing trash into gutters.
The program is a part of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly's (AMA) attempts to address one of the main sources of flooding in the capital and improve the implementation of cleanliness rules.
Mr. Allotey stated in an interview with the media that locals who take clear pictures of sanitation violators and send them to the Assembly will be compensated financially when the reports are validated.
Residents who submit several confirmed reports could earn extra, according to the mayor, who stated that ten successful reports would earn GH¢2,000 and five would earn GH¢1,000.
The announcement coincides with Accra's ongoing struggle with recurrent floods, which city officials regularly attribute to careless rubbish dumping and clogged drains.
The Mayor said the assembly is counting on the public to support them in their quest to clamp down on filth and flood in the capital city.
While urging public support, the Mayor, however, stressed that the scheme is not a means of employment but rather a community-driven initiative to protect Accra from preventable floods.
