Asantehene Calls for United Action Against Illegal Mining, Urges Stronger Legal Measures to Protect Environment

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has escalated his call for collective action against the environmental destruction caused by illegal mining. Speaking at the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) Conference in Kumasi on September 9, 2024, he urged professional groups such as the GBA, the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), and the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) to take a unified stance against illegal mining, or galamsey, which is threatening the nation's water bodies and forests.

The Asantehene praised the GBA President for taking a bold stand against illegal mining and emphasized the need for greater advocacy from all sectors. He called for the creation of a panel to visit the worst-affected communities, assess the environmental damage, and deliberate on how the legal system should respond. Highlighting the severity of mercury contamination, he questioned why stronger legal action isn't being taken against those responsible, stressing that society can no longer afford to remain passive.

The Asantehene also shared his personal experience during a recent trip to Cape Coast, where he witnessed firsthand the pollution of the River Pra, describing it as a moment of national shame. He urged immediate action to address the issue, asserting that illegal mining is a crisis that must be fought with urgency before further damage is done to the environment.
