Nigerian Afrobeats star Ayra Starr has been announced as a lead actress in the upcoming Hollywood adaptation of Tomi Adeyemi’s bestselling novel, Children of Blood and Bone. This marks a significant milestone in her burgeoning career, transitioning from music to the silver screen.  

The film boasts an impressive ensemble cast, including:
Thuso Mbedu as Zélie, the protagonist leading the quest to restore magic to the land of Orïsha.
Tosin Cole as Tzain, Zélie’s supportive older brother.
Amandla Stenberg as Princess Amari, who allies with Zélie in her mission.
Damson Idris as Prince Inan, torn between duty and his emerging powers.
Viola Davis as Mama Agba, a wise mentor guiding the young heroes.
Idris Elba as Lekan, a pivotal figure in the resistance against oppressive forces.
Chiwetel Ejiofor as King Saran, the antagonist determined to eradicate magic.
Cynthia Erivo as Admiral Kaea, enforcing the monarchy’s strict anti-magic policies.
Lashana Lynch as Jumoke, a fierce warrior aiding Zélie’s cause.
Regina King as Queen Nehanda, navigating the complexities of power and family.
Richard Mofe-Damijo in a yet-to-be-disclosed role, adding depth to the narrative.  

Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, known for The Old Guard and Love & Basketball, the film is set to bring Adeyemi’s richly imagined world to life. Principal photography commenced in Lagos, Nigeria, in February 2025, highlighting a commitment to authentic representation of African settings and narratives.

Ayra Starr’s involvement not only underscores her versatility as an artiste but also reflects the increasing prominence of African talents in global cinema. Fans eagerly anticipate her performance, which is expected to bring a fresh perspective to the story’s dynamic characters.

Children of Blood and Bone is slated for a theatrical release on January 15th, 2027, aiming to captivate audiences worldwide with its epic tale of magic, resilience, and cultural heritage.
