In a bold move that’s already stirring conversation in fashion and film circles, the Cannes Film Festival has officially banned “naked dressing” from its red carpet ahead of its 78th edition, which kicks off tomorrow.

The new policy targets the sheer, skin-baring gowns that have become a mainstay of the festival’s high-glamour aesthetic. For decades, Cannes has been known as the pinnacle of red carpet fashion, where couture meets controversy, but organizers now appear to be dialing back the drama in favor of what they’re calling a return to “timeless elegance.”
