Cissy Houston, the renowned American gospel singer, actress, and mother of the legendary Whitney Houston, passed away on Monday, October 7th at the age of 91. A trailblazing vocalist in her own right, Cissy Houston's remarkable life and career left an indelible mark on the music industry. According to a statement, the singer was surrounded by family when she died Monday at 10:30 a.m. ET while in hospice for care.

She had Alzheimer’s disease, the statement said. “Our hearts are filled with pain and sadness. We loss the matriarch of our family,” her daughter-in-law Pat Houston said. “Mother Cissy has been a strong and towering figure in our lives. A woman of deep faith and conviction, who cared greatly about family, ministry, and community. Her more than seven-decade career in music and entertainment will remain at the forefront of our hearts” her daughter-in-law added.

Born Emily Drinkard Houston on September 30, 1933, in Newark, New Jersey, Cissy Houston's musical journey began in the church choirs of her youth. Her distinctive, soulful voice soon led her to join the renowned gospel group, The Drinkard Singers, alongside her siblings.

Cissy Houston's impressive solo career spanned multiple genres, including gospel, R&B, and pop. She released several critically acclaimed albums, earning two Grammy Awards and multiple nominations. Her 1970 album, "Cissy Houston," showcased her remarkable vocal range and emotional depth.

As the mother of Whitney Houston, Cissy played an instrumental role in nurturing her daughter's talent. Whitney often credited her mother's guidance and encouragement for her own success. The duo's bond was unbreakable, both on and off stage.

Cissy Houston's influence extended beyond her family. She sang backup vocals for iconic artistes like Aretha Franklin, Jimi Hendrix, and Elvis Presley. Her contributions to the music industry paved the way for future generations of female vocalists.

Throughout her life, Cissy Houston remained committed to her gospel roots. She performed with the New Hope Baptist Church Choir in Newark, where Whitney got her start. This dedication earned her numerous gospel music awards and accolades.

Cissy Houston's legacy extends beyond her impressive discography. She was a devoted mother, mentor, and inspiration to countless musicians. Her love and support played a significant role in shaping Whitney's career and continue to inspire aspiring artistes.

As the music world mourns the loss of Cissy Houston, her remarkable life, and contributions to the industry will forever be celebrated. Her legacy lives on through her timeless music, the countless lives she touched, and the unforgettable talent of her beloved daughter, Whitney Houston.
