In an eye-opening session on 3Music TV's Big Conversation, Dr. Chris Arminah dismantled some common first-aid myths that many have grown up with. He pointed out that while cultural knowledge of first aid has its benefits, many long-held beliefs could potentially worsen injuries.
One example he tackled is using petroleum jelly for burns. Instead of soothing, this practice traps heat and worsens the injury. Dr. Arminah instead recommended cool water to soothe a burn before covering it with a clean, non-stick dressing. He also spoke about the misconception of applying heat to sprained ankles, explaining that cold compresses are far more effective in reducing swelling and providing pain relief. Using a method called RICE — Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation — is preferred and far more beneficial for sprains.
These myths, often passed down through generations, persist due to lack of awareness about modern first-aid practices. As Dr. Arminah emphasized, educating ourselves with medically sound first-aid knowledge is vital for handling injuries responsibly and effectively. This awareness may be crucial in emergencies, where traditional remedies could end up doing more harm than good.
