Dr. Aminarh Speaks on the Serious Consequences of Syphillis
Dr. Chris Aminarh

Dr. Chris Aminarh on 3Music TV describes Syphillis, as an often overlooked sexually transmitted infection (STI) with significant historical and health implications. Syphilis has been known since the 15th century, earning it the nickname "OG" (Original Gangster) of STIs due to its long-standing presence among humanity. Its history is intertwined with major impacts on public health and society. One of the most concerning aspects of syphilis is its ability to lie dormant in the body. After initial infection, symptoms might resolve, leading individuals to believe they are cured. However, the bacteria can remain latent, only to reactivate years later, causing secondary or tertiary syphilis. These stages can lead to neurological damage, potentially manifesting in forms like dementia, paralysis, or sensory impairments, and even blindness due to ocular syphilis if not treated. Dr. Aminarh emphasized the critical need for early detection, as symptoms in the early stages might be mild or mimic other conditions, like rashes or sores that could be mistaken for allergic reactions or other skin issues. Hence, regular health screenings are crucial, especially for sexually active individuals or those at higher risk due to lifestyle or demographic factors. Syphilis is treatable with antibiotics, particularly penicillin, which can cure the infection if administered in the early stages. However, the longer the disease goes untreated, the more complicated and severe the outcomes can be, potentially requiring extensive medical intervention. This segment aims to raise awareness about syphilis, encouraging more open conversations about sexual health, destigmatizing STI screenings, and promoting regular health check-ups as part of routine care. This underscores the need for public education on STIs, highlighting that while syphilis might be less discussed in the modern context compared to other STIs, its potential for harm remains significant, necessitating vigilance, education, and proactive health measures.
