The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is poised to receive its first shipment of mpox vaccine doses on Thursday, a critical step in combating the ongoing outbreak that has drawn international attention. Cris Kacita, head of the DRC’s mpox outbreak response, confirmed that a second delivery is expected on Saturday, marking a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to manage the public health crisis.

The DRC is currently at the epicenter of a worrying mpox outbreak, which the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a global public health emergency last month. The outbreak has raised alarm bells not only within the country but also around the world, as health officials scramble to contain the spread of the disease. However, efforts to curb the outbreak have been severely hampered by a critical shortage of vaccines.

“We’ll receive the first batch on September 5 and a second one on September 7,” Kacita stated in a message to Reuters, expressing hope that the arrival of the vaccines will bolster the country’s response to the crisis.

Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, is a viral disease that can cause severe illness and has been particularly concerning in regions where it is not endemic. The recent spike in cases has put immense pressure on the DRC’s healthcare system, which is already grappling with other public health challenges, including the ongoing battle against Ebola and other infectious diseases.
