FDA Ghana Warns Against Packaging of Contaminated “Galamsey” Water

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has issued a stern warning to the public and businesses regarding the packaging and sale of water sourced from illegal mining, commonly known as “Galamsey” sites. The authority cautioned that water from these areas is often highly contaminated and poses significant health risks.

In a public notice, the FDA highlighted that illegal mining activities, which are rampant across the country, involve the use of harmful chemicals such as mercury and cyanide. These chemicals, used in the mining process, frequently seep into nearby water bodies, contaminating rivers and streams. As a result, water sourced from Galamsey sites contains dangerous levels of heavy metals and other pollutants, making it unsafe for consumption.

The FDA further emphasized that any water intended for sale must be certified and approved after undergoing rigorous testing to meet Ghana’s health and safety standards. The authority also urged the public to remain vigilant and avoid consuming water from unverified or questionable sources, especially those connected to illegal mining activities.

This move comes as part of a broader effort by the FDA to clamp down on the distribution of unsafe food and beverages in the market and protect public health amidst growing concerns over the environmental impact of illegal mining in the country.

The public has been advised to report any suspicious activities involving the sale of unapproved water to the FDA for immediate action.
