Ghana Launches Major Operation to Stop Illegal Mining

Ghana Launches Major Operation to Stop Illegal Mining
President Akufo Addo

Written By : Afua Amankwanowa

President Akufo Addo has ordered a crackdown on illegal small-scale mining, known as galamsey, following a national security meeting to assess its environmental impact.

The move comes amid growing calls for action from Organised Labour, religious leaders, and other groups, who have threatened a nationwide strike if decisive action is not taken.

The Lands and Natural Resources Minister, Samuel Abu Jinapor, announced that the President has directed the deployment of police and military personnel to conduct swoops and enforce the law, including the decommissioning of illegal mining equipment if necessary.

The move is aimed at addressing the escalating galamsey crisis, which has resulted in the contamination of rivers, destruction of farmlands, and loss of livelihoods for many Ghanaians.
The issue gained urgency after the Ghana Water Company Limited warned of challenges in water supply in Cape Coast, Elmina, and surrounding communities due to inadequate raw water supply caused by galamsey activities.
