Ghana Police Refutes Social Media Claims Regarding 16-Year-Old Suspect’s Detention at Osu Correctional Centre

The Ghana Police Service has refuted rumors circulating on social media that 16-year-old suspect driver, Elrad Salifu Amoako, is not being held at the Osu Correctional Centre as directed by the Court. In a press release, the police clarified that Amoako, who was ordered by the Court on November 1st, 2024, to be detained at the Osu Correctional Centre, is currently in custody at the specified location.

The Police expressed concern over false claims, stating: “Following the Court’s order on 1st November 2024, suspect Elrad Salifu Amoako, was taken to the Osu Correctional Centre, where he remains as of this morning.” They emphasized that the misinformation circulating online is untrue and that spreading such false information constitutes an offense under Section 208 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), specifically relating to the publication of false news.

The Police have identified two social media accounts linked to the false publication: a TikTok user with the handle “prisywanlov1” and a Facebook user with the handle “EmpressPapa A-Amigos.” Investigations are underway to identify the individuals behind these accounts, who may face legal consequences for spreading misinformation.

The Police also condemned the exploitation of the tragic incident, which resulted in the loss of two lives, by individuals allegedly seeking attention. They urged the public to avoid spreading unverified information and to respect the grieving families.

This response underscores the Police Service’s commitment to maintaining public order and ensuring accountability for the spread of false information.
