Abdul Hakim Awal, a 23-year-old journalist from Kumasi, Ghana, has set a new world record for the longest time spent hugging a tree. His tree-hug-a-thon, held outside the Kumasi Cultural Centre, lasted an astonishing 24 hours and 21 minutes, breaking the previous record of 16 hours set by Ugandan environmental activist Faith Patricia Ariokot earlier this year. Abdul took on this challenge to raise awareness about the importance of nature conservation in Ghana. As part of his effort, he pledged to plant a new tree for every minute he spent hugging the tree, resulting in the planting of 1,461 new trees.

Abdul's record attempt required him to remain standing with his arms around the tree without any breaks. Following his achievement, the record category was redefined as the longest marathon hugging a tree, recognizing the endurance required for such an effort. Future challengers will be allowed breaks totaling up to two hours per day to help mitigate the risks of sleep deprivation.

Having witnessed the harsh effects of desertification in his family’s hometown of Garu, Abdul plans to initiate a nationwide tree-planting campaign. He emphasized the critical need for tree conservation, stating, "We know how trees, an essential resource for all humanity, are becoming scarce in Ghana. Despite being taught about tree preservation from a young age, the collective effort remains insufficient. This record attempt for the longest tree hug underscores the vital importance of preserving human life by preserving trees."

This achievement marks the second tree-hugging world record set by a Ghanaian this year. Abdul follows Abubakar Tahiru, a forestry student who set the record for the most trees hugged in one hour, with a total of 1,123. Additionally, a remarkable tree in France was recognized this year by Guinness World Records as the world’s tallest cork oak tree, standing at 21 meters (68.9 feet).
