Ghana had a disappointing start to the 2024 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup, suffering a 2-1 defeat to Austria on Monday evening. The Black Princesses were outplayed by the Europeans, who were making their debut in the tournament.

Austria took control of the match with goals from Hannah Fankhauser and Nicole Ojukwu on either side of halftime, before Stella Nyamekye scored a late consolation goal for Ghana. Yusif Basigi’s team, competing in their sixth consecutive World Cup, struggled from the outset, with Austria creating several chances early in the game.

The pressure from Austria paid off after 12 minutes when Fankhauser finished a well-executed move to open the scoring. Although the Black Princesses tried to respond after conceding, they were unable to seriously threaten Austria's defense.

Ghana's hopes of a comeback were further dashed in the 71st minute when they conceded a penalty, which Ojukwu converted to extend Austria's lead. Despite dominating the final 20 minutes and pulling a goal back through a long-range strike from Nyamekye, Ghana couldn’t find an equalizer, and Austria secured an important victory in their first World Cup match.

In his post-match comments, coach Basigi acknowledged that the opening-day defeat was a setback but expressed confidence that his team could recover in their remaining two group matches against Japan and New Zealand. "I wouldn’t say there is no pressure at all because if we had won or drawn this game against Austria, it would’ve given us motivation. But now we have no option but to go all out in the remaining two games," Basigi said.

Ghana's next challenge will be against Japan, who made an impressive start by thrashing New Zealand 7-0 in their opening group game.
