Ghanaian filmmaker Joe Wackle J. Kusi is making waves on the global stage, selected for the 18th edition of Talents Durban, a prestigious program by the Durban FilmMart Institute (DFMI) running July 18–21, 2025, in Durban, South Africa. Kusi’s documentary GHANA MUST GO is one of 26 projects chosen from over 500 entries across 18 African countries. The news has sparked excitement, with fans and peers praising his bold storytelling. Kusi joins Ghanaian film critic Alice Johnson in the cohort, highlighting Ghana’s growing influence in African cinema. His selection underscores his reputation as a multidisciplinary storyteller, previously recognized for works like NYAME MMA at Film Africa 2024.
Talents Durban, a cornerstone of the Durban FilmMart, nurtures emerging filmmakers through workshops, masterclasses, and networking with global industry leaders. Kusi’s GHANA MUST GO explores Ghanaian narratives, promising to captivate audiences with its authentic storytelling, a hallmark of his work seen in projects like GOODBYE, GOLD COAST, which interrogated Ghana’s independence history.
The competitive selection process, with only 26 projects chosen, highlights the documentary’s potential to resonate globally, as emphasized by DFMI’s director, Magdalene Reddy, who champions authentic African voices. Kusi’s inclusion in this program, partnered with the Berlin International Film Festival, marks a pivotal moment for his career.
The announcement has fueled anticipation, noting the rigorous selection from over 500 submissions. As Kusi prepares for this career-defining opportunity, Ghana celebrates its creative talent shining at one of Africa’s premier film platforms, recognized as the continent’s best film market by UNESCO’s 2021 Film Trends report.
His participation in Talents Durban, including online mentorship from May to July 2025, positions him to connect with broadcasters, financiers, and producers. With GHANA MUST GO set to amplify Ghanaian stories, Kusi’s journey is a demonstration of the rising global influence of African cinema.
