Hipgnosis Songs Capital announced that Justin Bieber had been paid over $200 million for the rights to his music. The Wall Street Journal previously reported in December that Justin Bieber was in discussions to sell off his catalog to Hipgnosis Songs Capital.
The Pop music
star’s back catalog, publication rights, and master recording shares are also
included in the agreement; together, they represent over 290 titles released before December 31, 2021. Additionally, sources told Variety that Justin Bieber's
tracks will continue to be distributed by Universal Music in the future.
However, some companies, particularly Hipgnosis, have embraced newer catalogs.
According to Variety, Bieber’s manga will still be regulated by Universal
Music, the singers longtime home.
Hipgnosis
Songs Capital, a joint venture between Hipgnosis Song Management and
Blackstone-managed funds, made the purchase on behalf of the company. Scooter
Braun at Hybe America, David Bolno at NKSFB, Aaron Rosenberg and Audrey
Benoualid at Myman Greenspan Fox Rosenberg Mobasser Younger & Light LLP,
and Michael Rhodes at Cooley were all attorneys who handled the representation
of Justin Bieber.
Braun, the 15-year manager of Justin Bieber at Hybe America and CEO of the company, said: "I want to thank Merck and his entire Hipgnosis team as well as all of our partners for working so hard to make this historic partnership possible.
We discovered right away that Merck and Hipgnosis would make the greatest
partner to maintain and expand this incredible legacy once Justin decided to
pursue a catalog contract. I've been fortunate for the past 15 years to follow
this adventure, and today I'm thrilled for everyone involved. The brilliance of
Justin is only beginning.
Hipgnosis
Song Management's founder and CEO, Merck Mercuriadis, stated: "Justin
Bieber has had a truly extraordinary impact on worldwide culture over the last
14 years. Such is the impact of this extraordinary archive, which has
approximately 82 million monthly listeners and over 30 billion streams on
Spotify alone, Scooter Braun has helped him build a magnificent catalog, and
it’s a pleasure to welcome Justin and his incredible songs and recordings to
the Hipgnosis family.” This acquisition ranks among the greatest agreements
ever made for an artist under the age of 70.
