Lawyer Akuoku-Nyantekyi Highlights the Role of Education and Legal Support in Ghana's Creative Industry
David William Akuoku-Nyantekyi

On 3Music TV, Lawyer David William Akuoku Nyantakyi sat down for a chat that felt more like a masterclass on navigating the often murky waters of Ghana's creative industry. He made it crystal clear that education is not just an option but a necessity for anyone looking to make their mark in music, film, or any creative field without getting their work or rights trampled on.

Nyantakyi didn't mince words when he talked about the institutions meant to protect creatives, like the National Intellectual Property Policy Strategy (NIPS) and the National Film Authority. He suggested that while these bodies are in place, they're not always the knights in shining armor artists might hope for. In reality, many creatives find themselves at the mercy of those who know how to play the system, lacking the protection they should rightfully expect.

His advice was both practical and urgent - educate yourself. He urged artists, musicians, and filmmakers to dive into the nitty-gritty of intellectual property law. Understand what you own, what you can sell, and what you might inadvertently give away. But knowing the law isn't enough; Nyantakyi recommended building connections with legal professionals who specialize in this area.

He spun tales from industry gatherings where the lack of IP savvy had cost creatives deals, particularly when rubbing shoulders with international partners who are often more versed in these matters. These stories weren't just cautionary; they were a clarion call for Ghana's creative community to level up their game.

Nyantakyi's message was loud and clear: in a world where your art can be your livelihood, you can't afford to be legally naive. Whether it's through workshops, formal education, or hiring a savvy lawyer, creatives need to arm themselves with knowledge or partner with those who have it. This is the only way to ensure that their creations are not only protected but also leveraged to their maximum potential, securing fair compensation and recognition in an industry that can sometimes feel like a legal minefield.
