Lil Wayne has confirmed that he won’t be attending Super Bowl LIX, despite it taking place in his hometown of New Orleans. The rapper shared the news in a video on his Instagram Stories, giving a shoutout to his city and mentioning that his seat would need to be filled in his absence.
This also means Wayne won’t be making a surprise appearance during Kendrick Lamar’s halftime performance, something fans had speculated about for months. However, he assured his followers that he has something VERY SPECIAL planned and advised them to stay tuned on Thursday, February 6.
Kendrick’s selection as the Super Bowl halftime performer sparked mixed reactions within the Hip Hop community, with some feeling that New Orleans native Lil Wayne had been unfairly overlooked by Jay-Z’s Roc Nation, which produces the show.
Despite the backlash, Roc Nation stood by their choice, later pointing to Kendrick’s recent Grammy success as proof that he was the right pick. Nevertheless, fans had still hoped for a surprise collaboration between Kendrick and Lil Wayne, given their past work together on the song Mona Lisa. So far, the only confirmed guest set to join Kendrick onstage is SZA, his upcoming tourmate while the rest of the setlist remains under wraps.
