Liverpool have finalized the signing of Netherlands international Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen for €35 million (£29.5m) on a five-year contract. The 24-year-old right-back, whose transfer was expedited by triggering his release clause, joins the Premier League champions as their first summer signing of 2025, following Trent Alexander-Arnold’s confirmed move to Real Madrid for the Club World Cup. 

Frimpong, a versatile player capable of playing right-back or winger, is highly rated by Liverpool manager Arne Slot, who sees him as a dynamic addition to a squad that includes Dutch compatriots Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo, and Ryan Gravenberch. His medical was completed on May 20, with the transfer official when the window opened on June 1.

Frimpong’s standout performances at Leverkusen, where he contributed 14 goals and 12 assists in 47 appearances during their unbeaten 2023-24 Bundesliga title run, made him one of Europe’s most coveted right-backs. This season, he added five goals and 12 assists in 48 matches, as Leverkusen finished second in the Bundesliga and reached the Champions League round-of-16. A product of Manchester City’s academy, Frimpong moved to Celtic in 2019, winning a domestic treble, before joining Leverkusen in 2021 for £11.5m. 

His attacking style, known for its vertical runs and goal-scoring prowess, contrasts with Alexander-Arnold’s playmaking, posing tactical questions for Slot’s system, especially with Mohamed Salah’s new contract reducing defensive duties.

The transfer has sparked excitement, with posts from fans noting Frimpong’s 74 goal contributions in 190 Leverkusen games. However, some fans, like, question how Frimpong’s wing-back role under Xabi Alonso will adapt to Liverpool’s setup, potentially requiring midfield adjustments or Salah shifting centrally. 

Frimpong expressed enthusiasm, citing positive talks with Slot, who praised his speed and energy. As Liverpool prepare for Salah’s potential absence at the 2025 African Cup of Nations, Frimpong’s versatility and homegrown status, due to his Manchester City youth days, add depth. The club is also in advanced talks for Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz for £109m, signaling an ambitious transfer window to defend their Premier League crown.
