National Commission for Civic Education Cautions Against Misinformation

As Ghana gears up for the 2024 general elections, the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has delivered a stern reminder to the public, particularly political activists, to avoid spreading false or misleading information. The Commission has warned that such actions have the potential to escalate tensions, posing a significant threat to the peace and stability of the nation during this critical period.

Patrick Asare, Principal Civic Education Officer at the Asante-Akim South Municipal Directorate of the NCCE, emphasized the grave consequences of misinformation and disinformation. He urged those who engage in these harmful practices to desist immediately, cautioning that their actions could lead the country into chaos. Mr. Asare's comments came during the inauguration of the Inter-Party Dialogue Committee at Juaso, an initiative spearheaded by the NCCE to foster peace before, during, and after the elections.

The newly established Inter-Party Dialogue Committee has been entrusted with several vital responsibilities. These include monitoring potential breaches of electoral laws, mediating minor conflicts, investigating allegations of rule violations, and issuing joint statements on political issues to help de-escalate tensions. The committee’s work is considered crucial in maintaining a peaceful atmosphere throughout the electoral process.

In addition, Mr. Asare urged the public to exercise caution when sharing information on social media platforms, emphasizing the importance of verifying the authenticity and sources of any content before disseminating it. He called on members of the committee to be active advocates for tolerance and peaceful coexistence, underscoring their significant role as key stakeholders in the electoral process.

Andrews Ofori Larbi, the Deputy Regional Director of the NCCE, further elaborated on the purpose of the committee, stating that it is designed to support and complement existing mechanisms that ensure a peaceful election. He encouraged committee members to fully participate in all relevant activities as the December 7 election date approaches, stressing that their engagement is essential for the success of the election process.

Moreover, Mrs. Franca Dei Yeboah, the Municipal Director of the Electoral Commission, appealed to political parties to resolve any disputes or grievances through dialogue rather than resorting to violence. She highlighted specific areas within the constituency that are prone to conflict and called on political parties and other stakeholders to take proactive steps to mitigate tensions in these hotspots.

Addressing concerns from representatives of various political parties, Mrs. Yeboah reaffirmed the Electoral Commission’s commitment to conducting a transparent, free, and fair election. She assured all stakeholders that the Commission is dedicated to safeguarding the integrity of the electoral process, ensuring that the true will of the people is accurately reflected in the election outcomes.

As the countdown to the 2024 elections continues, the NCCE's message remains clear and unequivocal: the preservation of peace and stability is of utmost importance. By adhering to principles of truth and transparency, and by working together, all stakeholders can play a pivotal role in ensuring a peaceful and credible electoral process that reflects the will of the Ghanaian people.
