NIA Begins Ghana Card Registration for Diaspora, Pilots in Canada and U.S.

The National Identification Authority (NIA) of Ghana has begun issuing Ghana Cards to Ghanaians abroad, starting with a pilot phase in Ottawa and Ontario, Canada. This initiative will later extend to Washington, D.C., and New York in the U.S. The pilot includes training Ghanaian mission staff as registration officers, enabling Ghanaians to register by filling forms and booking appointments online. The process requires applicants to visit the mission only for biometric data collection, taking just 10 minutes.

Fees vary by region, with ECOWAS nationals paying $55, other Africans $75, and non-African residents $115. Applicants must have valid passports or birth certificates, although those without these documents can be vouched for during interviews. However, individuals who renounced Ghanaian citizenship or non-Ghanaian spouses are ineligible. Dual citizens can register if they prove Ghanaian heritage.




NIA Executive Secretary Prof. Kenneth Agyemang Attafuah emphasized the Ghana Card’s integration into the ECOWAS system and its role in replacing various identification numbers in Ghana. He clarified that first-time registration in Ghana is free at district and regional offices but incurs fees at premium centers. IMS officials assured that all data is securely stored in Ghana and not shared without legal mandate.

Ghana's Ambassador to Canada, Anselm Ransford Adjetey Sowah, hosted the engagement in Ottawa, which NIA Chairman Mr. Abel Edusei described as a major milestone in the NIA’s global outreach efforts.
