Organized Labor has announced plans for an indefinite strike starting on Thursday, 10th October, in response to growing frustration over the government’s handling of various national issues, including illegal mining, widely known as Galamsey. The decision comes amid heightened tensions as concerns over environmental degradation and the government’s failure to effectively address the Galamsey menace continue to mount.

During a crucial meeting with leaders of Organized Labor, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo pleaded for more time to tackle the Galamsey crisis, acknowledging the depth of the problem but asking for patience as his administration works towards a lasting solution. The president emphasized that his government remains committed to curbing illegal mining activities, which have wreaked havoc on the nation’s water bodies, forests, and local communities.

Organized Labor, representing various worker unions, has expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s pace in dealing with environmental and labor-related concerns. The strike, which is expected to bring multiple sectors to a standstill, is a call for immediate action on a range of issues, including illegal mining, which has been a contentious topic in recent protests such as those led by the Democracy Hub.
