Paul Merson, a former Arsenal star turned Sky Sports pundit, has recently shared his thoughts on Manchester United’s struggles under head coach Ruben Amorim, Arsenal’s chase of Premier League leaders Liverpool, and Mohamed Salah’s place in history. As of February 26, 2025, Manchester United are faltering in the lower half of the Premier League table, with just 4 wins from 12 matches since Amorim’s arrival from Sporting CP in November 2024. Merson blames Amorim’s rigid use of a 3-4-3 formation, which worked wonders in Portugal—where he won two league titles—but has floundered at Old Trafford. He points to a recent 2-2 draw against Everton on February 22, 2025, where Amorim admitted his team “didn’t exist in the first half,” as evidence of the system’s failure. United’s defenders, like Harry Maguire, Matthijs de Ligt, and Lisandro Martinez, lack the speed for a high line, while midfielders Casemiro and Christian Eriksen struggle to cover gaps. Merson insists Amorim should switch to a four-at-the-back setup, like a 4-2-3-1, to suit players like Bruno Fernandes and Rasmus Højlund, though he doubts the club, which posted a £113 million loss last year, will sack him soon.
Meanwhile, Merson sees Arsenal, with 51 points from 25 matches, closing the nine-point gap on Liverpool, who lead with 60 points and a +36 goal difference, driven by Salah’s 15 goals and 11 assists. Arsenal’s recent 5-2 win over West Ham on February 23, 2025, shows promise, but injuries to Bukayo Saka, out since December 2024, and others have held them back. Merson believes Liverpool’s lead could shrink if Salah, Virgil van Dijk, and Trent Alexander-Arnold—whose contracts end in June 2025—don’t re-sign. On Salah, Merson is effusive, noting his 166 goals and 91 assists in 269 Premier League games. With 26 goal involvements this season, Salah’s brilliance has Merson ranking him among the league’s all-time greats, alongside Thierry Henry and Cristiano Ronaldo, calling him “extraordinary” and a “difference-maker.” As the season unfolds, Amorim’s adaptability, Arsenal’s resurgence, and Salah’s legacy will remain focal points in the Premier League story.
