Taylor Swift has endorsed Kamala Harris for president, following the conclusion of Tuesday night's debate against Donald Trump. In an Instagram post, Swift expressed her support for Harris, praising her as a "steady-handed, gifted leader" and someone who champions the causes she believes in. Swift referred to herself as the "Childless Cat Lady," a jab at remarks made by Trump’s running mate, JD Vance, who previously mocked Harris and other prominent Democrats by calling them "childless cat ladies." Vance has since claimed his comments were sarcastic, but they drew significant backlash.
In her post, Swift explained that she is voting for Harris because she believes in her leadership and her ability to bring calm and order to the country, contrasting it with what she called "chaos" under Trump. She also commended Harris’s vice-presidential candidate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, for his longstanding advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights, IVF access, and women's reproductive rights.
Swift, who also endorsed Biden and Harris in the 2020 election, explained that part of her motivation to speak out came after an AI-generated image falsely showing her endorsing Trump appeared on his website. She described her concerns about the dangers of AI and misinformation, saying the incident prompted her to clarify her voting plans publicly.
Despite Swift's large following—283 million on Instagram—experts suggest her endorsement may not drastically shift support toward Harris. Lauren Rosewarne, a media and politics professor at the University of Melbourne, noted that Swift's fan base, largely young women, already aligns with Harris’s demographic. While Swift’s post may boost voter registration among her fans, it is unlikely to have a significant impact on the election outcome.
The singer's post received over 4.5 million likes within hours, with Swift urging her followers, particularly first-time voters, to do their research and register to vote. She also promised to share more voting information on her page in the coming days.
This is not Swift’s first time endorsing a Democratic candidate. She was a vocal supporter of Biden and Harris in 2020 and was outspoken against Trump, especially during the national protests following George Floyd’s murder. Her latest endorsement comes after a heated debate between Harris and Trump, where the two clashed on key issues like abortion, the economy, and immigration.
Other celebrities, including John Legend, Olivia Rodrigo, and George Clooney, have also endorsed Harris, while Trump has received backing from figures like Elon Musk, Hulk Hogan, and Amber Rose.
