Fans of the hit South Korean drama series "Squid Game" were shocked to hear news of injuries sustained by contestants on the set of the upcoming real-life Squid Game production.
According to a post by BBC News, three players have been hospitalized after an accident occurred during filming in East England, Bedfordshire.
The original Squid Game series, which premiered on Netflix in 2021 and quickly amassed 111 million viewers within its first six days of release, follows a secret contest between 456 players facing financial difficulties as they compete in a risky game for a chance to win 35 million dollars.
With such a gripping premise, it's no wonder that Netflix announced plans to produce a real-life version of the game, involving 456 recruits from around the world battling it out for a 4.5 million dollar prize.
Despite Netflix denying claims of severe injury, the streaming giant has reportedly invested heavily in safety procedures on set, including having medical practitioners on standby in case of emergencies.
A spokesperson for the platform stated, "Although it was very cold on set and participants were prepared for that, any claims of serious injury are untrue."
The original "Squid Game" series, which was created and produced by Hwang Dong-hyuk and earned six awards out of 14 nominations at the 74th Emmy Awards ceremony in 2022, took twelve years to prepare for production.
However, it only took twelve days for the world to fall in love with the show, with the hashtag #Squidgame trending on social media with 22.8 billion uses according to Parrot Analytics.
While fans eagerly await the release of the real-life Squid Game, rumours suggest that it may arrive before the end of 2023. But with injuries sustained on set, the question remains - is the thrill of the game worth the risk?
