Former Chief Executive Officer of the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC), Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu, has been extradited from the United States to Ghana to begin serving a 10-year prison sentence after being convicted on more than 70 corruption-related offences.
The extradition marks the first surrender of a fugitive from the United States to Ghana since 2009, according to the U.S. Embassy in Ghana, which described the development as evidence of strong law enforcement cooperation between the two countries.
“Justice has no borders,” the embassy said in a statement, noting that Tamakloe-Attionu had been convicted on more than 70 corruption-related charges, including the embezzlement of funds equivalent to more than six million dollars belonging to Ghanaian taxpayers.
Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, said Tamakloe-Attionu arrived in Accra on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, after Ghana’s extradition request was approved by U.S. authorities.
According to him, the Accra High Court convicted and sentenced Tamakloe-Attionu in absentia in April 2024. Three months later, in July 2024, the Government of Ghana formally submitted an extradition request to the United States seeking her return to serve the sentence.
Kwakye Ofosu said the extradition process took more than two years of court proceedings in the United States before American authorities notified the Ghanaian government in January this year that her surrender had been approved.
Officials of the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Prisons Service have since taken her into custody and are making arrangements for her imprisonment.
The former MASLOC boss was sentenced to 10 years in prison after being found guilty of multiple offences, including stealing, causing financial loss to the state, conspiracy, causing loss to public property, and money laundering in connection with her tenure at the state microfinance institution.
A U.S. District Court in Nevada earlier certified Ghana’s request for her extradition after determining that there was sufficient evidence supporting the offences for which she had been convicted and that the extradition treaty between Ghana and the United States remained valid and enforceable.
The court subsequently ordered that she be held in the custody of the United States Marshals Service pending final approval of her surrender.
Court records showed that Tamakloe-Attionu had failed to return to Ghana after being granted permission in 2021 to travel to the United States for medical treatment while her criminal trial was ongoing.
Meanwhile, Kwakye Ofosu disclosed that Ghana’s Attorney-General is expected to meet officials of the United States Department of Justice for bilateral discussions on pending extradition requests involving the two countries.
