Ghana's musical prodigy, Wanzam The Classic DJ, has once again set the stage ablaze with the release of his latest single, NONSENSE. This vibrant track, featuring the exceptional talents of Marince Omario and Gaga Ranks, is a dynamic celebration of Ghanaian youth culture and a heartfelt nod to the foundational roots of Hip Hop.
NONSENSE masterfully blends traditional Ghanaian sounds with contemporary beats, drawing heavy inspiration from the early 2000s rap era, particularly the influential work of legendary producer Hammer of The Last Two. Hammer's pivotal contributions to the Ghanaian Hip Hop scene, known as Hiplife, have left an enduring legacy, which Wanzam honors in his latest release.
Produced by the adept Lee Hendrix, NONSENSE follows the success of Wanzam's alté-influenced single, SOBA. This new track highlights the extraordinary creative versatility of Ghanaian youth, combining timeless elements with modern rhythms to craft a sound that is both nostalgic and innovative. Wanzam The Classic DJ describes NONSENSE as more than just music; it's a bold statement that demands attention. Each artiste brings their unique flair to the table, creating a synergy that is palpable throughout the track, he remarks.
In a revealing interview with Music In Africa, Wanzam, whose real name is Joey Joseph Nii Ayi Otokunor, expressed his deep admiration for Hammer's work. Hammer of The Last Two laid the foundation for Ghanaian Hip Hop. Understanding his work is essential to knowing where we come from and shaping where we’re going. His influence shaped my musical journey. For me, this is a rare opportunity to celebrate a veteran producer and Hip Hop as a whole, he shared. Wanzam also hinted at an upcoming EP release before the end of 2024.
Over the past five years, Wanzam The Classic DJ has solidified his presence in Accra's alté scene, collaborating with prominent artistes such as Black Sherif, DJay, Baaba J, and Essilfie. As a resident DJ at Accra-based Guide Radio, he has become a central figure in the local music community.
NONSENSE emerges from the dynamic and evolving landscape of Ghanaian music, with Wanzam The Classic DJ at the forefront of this exciting movement. With its infectious beats and profound cultural homage, NONSENSE is poised to make waves both locally and internationally.
In essence, Wanzam The Classic DJ continues to push the boundaries of Ghanaian music, bringing a fresh yet respectful approach to the genre. His latest single is a cultural movement that embodies the spirit and energy of a new generation. As he continues to innovate and inspire, Wanzam remains a beacon of creativity and a proud representative of Ghanaian artistry on the global stage.
