Terry Brunk, known to wrestling fans worldwide as Sabu, passed away on May 11, 2025, at the age of 60, as confirmed by WWE and All Elite Wrestling (AEW). The cause of death has not been disclosed, but the news has sent shockwaves through the wrestling community, coming just weeks after Sabu’s retirement match on April 18, 2025, where he defeated Joey Janela in a brutal no-ropes barbed wire match during WrestleMania 41 weekend in Las Vegas.

WWE issued a statement mourning the loss of the hardcore pioneer, noting his iconic contributions to Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) and his memorable stint with WWE in 2006-2007. Tributes from peers like Rob Van Dam, Taz, and Francine flooded X, with Francine writing, “My heart is broken. Rest in peace to my friend Sabu. I love you always”.

Sabu, trained by his uncle, WWE Hall of Famer The Sheik, revolutionized professional wrestling with his high-risk, death-defying style in ECW during the 1990s. Nicknamed the “Suicidal, Homicidal, Genocidal, Death-Defying Maniac,” he became a two-time ECW World Heavyweight Champion, popularizing tables matches and barbed wire battles in North America. His legendary feuds with Rob Van Dam, Taz, and Mick Foley defined ECW’s gritty era, with matches like the 1997 No-Rope Barbed-Wire bout against Terry Funk earning notoriety as “too extreme even for ECW.”

Sabu’s brief WWE run saw him challenge for the World Heavyweight Championship against Rey Mysterio and compete at WrestleMania 23 in his native Detroit, where he and the ECW Originals triumphed before over 80,000 fans. His final public appearance at the Tri-State Wrestling Alliance reunion at Philadelphia’s 2300 Arena, formerly the ECW Arena, marked a poignant farewell.

The wrestling world has been quick to honor Sabu’s fearless legacy, with AEW noting his “unforgettable high-risk moments” and GCW owner Brett Lauderdale calling his final match “100 percent authentic Sabu” (@AEW,). Sabu’s influence endures in modern hardcore wrestling, with stars like Sami Zayn and Dave Meltzer crediting him as a game-changer who reshaped the industry. Despite personal struggles, including a 2013 medical emergency and financial hardships in later years, Sabu remained a beloved figure, known for his privacy and resilience. As the wrestling community mourns, his scars, sacrifices, and revolutionary spirit ensure that his legacy will live on for generations.
