Ghanaian Gospel musician Akesse Brempong was the latest guest on 3Music Tv's Big Conversation where he spoke about his career and ministry amongst other things.
According to him, he wasn't always a chart-topping gospel musician. In his youth, he swayed to secular tunes, serenading girls with popular hits. But a pivotal moment in high school led him to a spiritual awakening, and he found his true calling in gospel music.
Brempong's musical foundation was
laid in the church. He honed his craft singing in the
choir, absorbing the traditional sounds
that would later influence his unique style.
Recognizing the limitations of the
accordion-driven gospel music of the past, Brempong dared to be different. He infused his sound with contemporary influences like reggae
and Afrobeat, creating a sound that resonated
with younger audiences.
This innovation wasn't without criticism. Some questioned whether contemporary sounds could carry the weight of the gospel message. But Brempong was unwavering. He believed that music was dynamic, reflecting the evolving culture. He argued that impactful lyrics, not outdated rhythms, were the heart of gospel music.
Brempong's gamble paid off. He rose to national and international recognition, becoming the fastest-rising contemporary gospel musician in West Africa. His music transcended borders, finding a home in churches and hearts worldwide. He attributed his success to the constant honing of his craft in church performances and the unwavering support of his team, the Tribe of Judah.
However, the journey wasn't without challenges. The lack of robust systems for gospel musicians in Ghana hindered their ability to reach international heights. Brempong advocated for a shift, urging churches to invest in record labels and nurture the talents within their congregations. He envisioned a future where Ghanaian gospel music could compete on the global stage, carried by the powerful message of the gospel and the infectious energy of contemporary sounds.
Brempong's story is one of faith, innovation, and the power of music to bridge
cultures. He is a testament to the enduring
spirit of gospel music, proving that it can evolve with the
times while staying true to its core message. As he embarks on his next adventure, performing at the Emmanuel Praise event in the UK, one thing is certain: Akesse Brempong's unique sound and
unwavering faith will continue to inspire and captivate audiences worldwide.
