Akufo-Addo Directs Reduction of Electricity Exports to Tackle 'Dumsor' Crisis

Samuel Atta Akyea, Chairman of the Energy Committee of Parliament, has revealed that President Akufo-Addo has instructed the Volta River Authority to decrease the export of electricity to neighboring nations in response to the ongoing intermittent power outages, commonly referred to as 'dumsor'. Speaking in an interview on JoyNews in Accra, the Abuakwa South Member of Parliament emphasized that the directive demonstrates the President's prioritization of domestic energy needs over potential profits from exporting electricity. "The President prioritizes national requirements over foreign profits," he affirmed.

"We cannot afford to prioritize making money abroad while the national economy suffers. Therefore, for the time being, exports will be reduced, and electricity will be directed to the national grid to ensure availability," he explained to host Evans Mensah. Ghana has recently faced challenges with unstable electricity supply, causing disruptions across various sectors and inconveniences for consumers. Despite exporting power to neighboring countries like Togo, Benin, and Burkina Faso, the decision to limit electricity exports is an initial step by the government to alleviate the impact of the power crisis on the nation's economy and its people.

Atta Akyea underscored the President's dedication to resolving the current instability in the country's power supply.
