In the bustling world of Afrobeats where rhythm meets rebellion, one name is quietly carving her place through grace, grit and global flair Akuvi. The Ghanaian-Norwegian artiste is redefining the boundaries of Afro-soul, merging vulnerability and vision to tell stories that transcend borders.
From a home steeped in music with her father, Kofi Kumoji and sister, Analisa Kumoji, both musicians. Akuvi’s path seemed destined, though it wasn’t without hesitation. “For many years, I was scared to admit I wanted to be an artiste,” she revealed on Culture Daily. “I was insecure about my deep voice. I thought it wasn’t the typical soulful sound people wanted to hear.”
That self-doubt didn’t last forever. In 2019, while living in South Africa, Akuvi decided to confront her fears head-on and recorded her first song, OBLIGATIONS, a heartfelt conversation with God about her purpose. Since then, she has grown into one of the few female Afrobeat voices representing Norway on global stages, including the world’s biggest music competition, Eurovision.
“Eurovision is a songwriting contest,” she explained. “They asked me to perform someone else’s song, but I insisted on doing my own Afrobeats. I mixed English and Norwegian, and they loved it.”
Her boldness not only introduced Norway to an unfamiliar sound but also showcased the power of staying true to one’s identity. “As an artiste, it’s your responsibility to introduce people to something new,” she said. “You never know who’s watching your content. Sometimes the biggest people are paying attention quietly.”
Beyond the spotlight, Akuvi’s worldview is shaped by her diverse upbringing and her academic depth, she holds a Master’s degree in Peacebuilding and International Relations. Her global perspective reflects in her artistry, where she blends the vulnerability of love, fear and identity with the pulse of Africa’s rhythm.
“I’ve learned to do it scared,” she said firmly. “A lot of people disguise insecurity as procrastination. I’ve mastered the art of doing it anyway.”
Today, Akuvi stands as a symbol of authenticity. A woman navigating culture, courage and creativity. With new music on the horizon, including a collaboration with Stonebwoy, she continues to shine, not just like a diamond, but as one moulded through pressure and purpose.
