Conflict In Crowd Forces Delay in the World Cup Qualifier Match Between Argentina and Brazil
Brawling Argentine and Brazillian Fans

Lionel Messi, Argentina's captain, accused Brazilian police of brutality, leading to a half-hour delay in their World Cup qualifier against Brazil. The clash between Brazilian and Argentinian fans behind one of the goals during the national anthems prompted police to charge at the visiting contingent with drawn night sticks.

Following the clashes, some Argentine fans reacted by tearing up seats and throwing them at officers, while others, in a state of panic, rushed onto the pitch to evade the disturbances. On the field, an Argentina supporter lay with a bloodied face and was subsequently stretchered out of the stadium. Led by Messi, the Argentina team approached the terraces in an effort to restore calm before ultimately leaving the pitch and returning to the dressing room.

Messi expressed his concern after the game , stating, "We saw how the police were hitting people also with some of our families here — it also happened in the Libertadores final”.
“They are more focused on that than on playing the game”.
“We are a family. We decided to play to make situation more calm”.

Brazil's captain, Marquinhos, engaged with Messi and the Argentine players in calming the situation and echoed the concerns, stating, "We were concerned about the families, women, and children whom we saw in panic up there in the stands," in comments to reporters.

Argentina players eventually re-entered the field after police contained visiting fans in a designated area, leading to a prolonged delay before the match commenced. Argentina secured a 1-0 victory with a 63rd-minute header from defender Nicolas Otamendi. They celebrated the win against their fiercest rivals in front of their fans at the same end of the ground where the earlier trouble had taken place. This marked Brazil's third consecutive defeat, and they had midfielder Joelinton sent off 18 minutes from time.
