DopeNation Calls Out Award Schemes for Stifling Innovation with Rigid Categories

DopeNation Calls Out Award Schemes for Stifling Innovation with Rigid Categories
Dope Nation
Ghanaian musical duo DopeNation, comprised of twins Michael and Tony Boafo, has reignited discussions about the politics of music awards in Ghana, particularly following their absence from the 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) nominations. In a candid interview with 3Music Networks, the duo addressed the challenges of fitting their groundbreaking GhanaPiano album, released on July 10, 2025, into the rigid categories of existing award schemes, shedding light on systemic issues that hinder innovative artistes.

DopeNation revealed that their hit single ZORMIZOR, a standout track from the 17-track GhanaPiano album, was not submitted for TGMA consideration, a decision that led to their exclusion from this year’s nominations. Robert Klah, Head of Communications at Charterhouse Productions, confirmed that the organizers attempted to contact DopeNation but received no response. The duo argued that Zormizor and other tracks from GhanaPiano do not neatly align with traditional categories like hiplife or hip-hop, despite their popularity. “Why would you give me an award for best hiplife when ZORMIZOR is not hiplife? It could have elements of it, but it’s something else,” they stated, emphasizing that such categorization restricts creativity.

The GhanaPiano album, a fusion of Ghanaian highlife, Afrobeats, hiplife, and South African Amapiano, has been praised for its innovative sound, with collaborations featuring prominent artistes. However, DopeNation highlighted that industry politics often “spoil the craft,” forcing artistes to conform to outdated genre definitions. “When we represent as a country, we no get sound because everybody wants things some way to fit highlife, hiplife, or hip-hop,” they noted, critiquing the lack of a distinct Ghanaian musical identity on the global stage.

The duo’s comments come amid recent industry tensions, including public disputes with artistes like E.L and Kuami Eugene. Despite these challenges, DopeNation remains focused on their craft, with GhanaPiano gaining traction on platforms like TikTok and earning praise on X for its cultural impact. Industry observers are now calling for award schemes to adapt their frameworks to better accommodate evolving genres, ensuring that trailblazing artistes like DopeNation are not sidelined for their innovation.
