A wave of disappointment swept through the hearts of thousands of football enthusiasts in Hong Kong when the much-anticipated Argentine superstar, Lionel Messi, remained sidelined during a friendly match for Inter Miami on Sunday.
The atmosphere, initially charged with cheers and excitement, took a turn towards dissatisfaction and calls for refunds as Messi failed to make an appearance in the sold-out Hong Kong Stadium, which accommodates 40,000 fans.
Inter Miami, on a mission to prove their mettle after a winless global pre-season tour, secured a comfortable 4-1 victory against a Hong Kong XI in the event branded as Tatler XFEST Hong Kong. However, the outcome seemed inconsequential to the disappointed fans, who had hoped to witness the presence of Messi, a World Cup champion and eight-time Ballon d'Or winner.
The frustration was palpable both before and during the game, as spectators prioritized Messi's appearance over the final score. Even the Hong Kong government shared in the dismay, expressing disappointment in the 36-year-old's absence and calling for an explanation from the event organizer.
"Messi was not able to play in the friendly game today, and the government and fans are equally disappointed at the arrangements by the event organizer," stated the government in a Sunday release. "The event organizer owes fans an explanation."
The turn of events left fans yearning for an insight into why Messi did not grace the field, turning what was supposed to be a celebration of football into an unexpected moment of frustration and discontent among the passionate Hong Kong soccer community.
