Year in and out, the VGMA’s has remained Ghana music’s most celebrated event, packed with surprises and this year’s was no different.
Kidi
From surprise performances and appearances to tension-packed expectations and outcomes, the night of the awards was action-filled and climaxed with mixed emotions, reviews and several talking points.
The show began with a starlit performance from Piesie Esther, contender for the Artiste of the Year, alongside some of her colleagues in the Gospel fraternity who set the tone for a grace-filled evening. Their performance was followed by a pleasantly surprising performance by KiDi. Lynx' newly-signed and Unsung Artiste, DSL, delivered an applaudable performance.
There were performances by some of the industry’s celebrated artistes - Epixode, Lasmid, Black Sherif, Gyakie, King Promise, Kwabena Kwabena, Medikal and Sarkodie. The air of nostalgia filled the arena at the sight of Ofori-Amponsah whose performance kept the audience on their feet and a deserving standing ovation after. Finesse hitmaker and Nigerian artiste, Pheelz, had the crowd pumped with his performance.
The list of winners also varied in category as there were unexpected turnouts especially in the Album of the Year category which was taken home by King Promise’s 5 Star album as opposed to the public’s expectation to see Black Sherif win it. He however took home the most coveted award of the night which was tightly contended for by other nominees especially Piesie Esther whose supporters were overly convinced she could win on the night.
The overall outlook on the event came down to the masses expectation being met and yet another career highlight made by Ghana’s current biggest export, Black Sherif.
