Ghana's Energy Minister Defends Against Dumsor Allegations, Vows Improvement Amid Power Challenges
Dr. Matthew Opoku-Prempeh
Written by Afua Amankwanowa

The Minister for Energy, Dr. Matthew Opoku-Prempeh, adamantly rebuffs the notion that Ghana has regressed to the era of power cuts, commonly referred to as dumsor, which plagued the nation during the previous National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration. Speaking at the inauguration of the NPP campaign team in the Ashanti Region, Dr. Opoku Prempeh sought to allay public concerns by assuring them that proactive measures are being implemented to effectively address the current power challenges.

With fervor, Dr. Opoku Prempeh vehemently opposes the idea of introducing a timetable for power cuts, arguing against its necessity and viability, particularly since the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has voiced its disapproval. He underscores the complexity of the energy sector, emphasizing that continual efforts are being made by his ministry to ameliorate the situation. Moreover, he staunchly supports the ECG's decision not to implement a load-shedding timetable, citing potential adverse effects on the nation's economy and citizens' livelihoods.

In his impassioned defense of the government's energy policies, Dr. Opoku Prempeh asserts that the current state of affairs represents a marked improvement over the previous administration's tenure. He boldly claims that under the leadership of the NPP, the energy sector has undergone a transformation, citing statistics that purportedly demonstrate a 300-fold enhancement compared to the NDC's performance over a similar timeframe.

Despite Dr. Opoku Prempeh's assertions, recent power outages, particularly prevalent in Greater Accra, have sparked widespread frustration among citizens and disrupted the daily operations of businesses and households alike. The erratic supply of electricity has cast a shadow of uncertainty, prompting calls for swift and effective action from the government and relevant authorities to address the underlying issues plaguing the energy sector.
