GSS Reveals Over 500 Thousand Ghanaians Faced Job Loss in 2022 & 2023

Over half a million Ghanaians faced job loss in the 2022/2023 period, according to the Ghana Statistical Service's (GSS) Annual Household Income and Expenditure Survey (AHIES). The survey revealed a notable shift in employment dynamics, with more than 500,000 individuals transitioning from employment to unemployment during this timeframe.



Unemployment, defined as a continuous period without work despite the capacity and willingness to work, affected around 280,000 individuals who remained jobless into the second quarter of 2023. Despite a slight decrease in subsequent quarters, approximately 1.3 million people were unemployed, leaving about 752,000 individuals without employment by the third quarter of 2023.



The report highlights the need for targeted strategies to address unemployment variations across regions and underscores the vital role of AHIES data in shaping national labor policies and initiatives.
