On Tuesday 7th February 2023 LeBron James surpassed NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s 39-year-old record of being the all-time leading scorer of the NBA in the closing moment of a 133-130 loss in a game against Oklahoma City Thunder.
The four-time NBA champion and MVP, despite winning the league’s single-season scoring title, once needed 36 points to pass Abdul-Jabbar’s record of 38,387 points. As opposed to beating the record with a skyhook, a fadeaway jumper became the precedent for a game-stopping celebration to allow the new record holder celebrate the milestone with his family, friends, teammates, business partners and the former record-holder.
The new record holder, Lebron James, ended
the night with 38 points, breaking a record many presumed would never be broken.
This comes as the biggest record yet amongst several other records broken by the 38-year-old in his 20th season playing in the NBA.
