John Dramani Mahama, the Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has articulated his intentions to enforce import restrictions on specific essential commodities should he emerge victorious in the December elections. At present, imports of goods and services constitute approximately 40 percent of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). During a stakeholder engagement session with members of the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) in Accra, Mahama underscored the necessity of enacting legislation to provide robust support for local businesses. He outlined his plans to rejuvenate strategic industries such as the Volta Aluminium Company (VALCO), with a particular focus on the downstream aluminum sector.
The former President emphasized the importance of augmenting local production capacities for a range of items, including rice, sugar, tomato, fish, poultry, meat, vegetable cooking oil, and pharmaceutical products. Mahama stated that by bolstering local manufacturing capabilities for these and other products, his administration would seek to implement restrictions on the unchecked importation of these goods.
In essence, Mahama’s strategy aims to foster self-reliance and promote economic growth by prioritizing domestic production and reducing dependency on imported goods. This approach aligns with his broader vision of building a more resilient and sustainable economy for Ghana.
