Legendary rapper Missy Elliott was earlier inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, making her the first female rapper to achieve the feat. She was introduced and spurred on by fellow Hip-Hop icon Queen Latifah who had some thoughts to share and spoke to Elliott’s talent, as well as her unprecedented musicianship.
Speaking on her impact, Latifah is heard saying, “Trust me, nothing sounded the same after Missy Elliott came on the scene,” Latifah said. “Nothing. All the kick snares, everything changed. The bass lines changed, the pockets changed, the cadence, the writing. And that’s because Missy has always been a futurist, someone who’s always looking ahead.”
After a few words of admiration from Latifah, a video montage was shown during the ceremony, featuring artistes such as Megan Thee Stallion and Cardi B. Elliott then delivered a performance that expanded on her career including hits such as “GET UR FREAK ON, THE RAIN, SUPDA DUPA FLY, WORK IT, PASS THAT DUTCH and LOSE CONTROL accented by the Portsmouth native walking through the crowd while reciting her lyrics.
In her own acceptance speech, Elliott expressed gratitude to those who have helped her throughout her entertainment journey, in addition to paying tribute to the artistes who have come before the Music Awards Grammy Award-winning artiste.
Missy also spoke about the importance and impact of hip-hop and its 50th anniversary, “It feels like a long way to go when you're in the hip hop world and to be here, it means a lot to me,” she told the attentive audience.
Although she is the first female rapper to be indicted, Elliott is one of the few hip-hop artistes who have been placed into this prestigious club, among them are Run-DMC, the Beastie Boys, Eminem, Public Enemy, and Jay-Z.
Earlier this year, DJ Kool Herc was also honored with the Musical Influence Award for his contributions to hip-hop culture.
