Media Personality and Host of Culture Daily on
3Music TV, MzGee has opined that most reality shows in the country lack the
ability to guide contestants when the shows end.
In a discussion on ways music reality shows
impact the music industry, she explained that after the spotlight is given to
the contestants, some are unable to survive when the harsh realities of the
industry hit them. According to her, inadequate capital to push their career
and tough competition in the industry are some major factors which hinder their
success.
Speaking on Culture Daily she said, “The problem is what we do after we see these talents and that’s what is lacking if you ask me in almost all the reality shows that we have in this country. We finally find the talents, we concentrate on the one who wins and maybe forget the rest. And until you push yourself, and again no one owes you anything. I gave you the platform to come showcase what you’ve got. You came, you showcased now you have to find your bearing. Part of the things that I think we don’t do is teach them how to find their bearing. When they are still on the show they get some teachings but when they get out of the show, they are facing the reality now. The reality of life, the reality of competitions from other musicians, and even how to go about the music business. Capital to even start. Because mostly the prize that comes is mostly tangibles so the money you get, sometimes people go for loans they have to repay. So finding their feet after the reality show is the major problem if you ask me because that’s not what a lot of people concentrate on.”
Amid such obstacles, she stated that she faults
no organizers as their purpose is to unearth talents and that with
their absence, it will be difficult to make discoveries.
Adding up to the discussion, Ghanaian Entertainment Journalist and Host of 3Music TV’s Culture Daily Emmanuel Kwame Sarpong, popularly referred to as Olele Salvador stated that the music industry is weak in the aspect of Artistes and Repertoire (A&R).
Ghanaian Entertainment Journalist Emmanuel Kwame Sarpong a.k.a Olele Salvador
Citing some
personalities from past reality shows, he made the argument that as a result of
poor A&R structures, many exceptional talents have been lost in the past.
“I
think it shows we don’t have a strong A&R industry. Because these names we
are mentioning right now, at the time we watched them, we thought these were
the next big thing to happen to the country. And it failed due to lack of
proper A&R structures.”
Over the years musical reality shows have
groomed many stars including KiDi, Kuami Eugene, Mr. Drew among many others.
