Onana Speaks Out As Cameroon's AFCON Journey Takes an Unexpected Turn

Onana Speaks Out As Cameroon's AFCON Journey Takes an Unexpected Turn
Andre Onana

Cameroon's standout goalkeeper, Andre Onana, opened up after sitting out the team's first Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023 clash against Guinea, which ended in a 1-1 draw. The recent addition to the national team from Manchester United shared his thoughts on not making the squad.

Onana was absent from the Guinea match due to his late arrival to join the national team. Having played for Manchester United in the Premier League against Tottenham Hotspur just a day prior, his absence surprised many, especially given Cameroon's draw in the opening game.

Before the match, a video surfaced of Onana in conversation with Diouf, sparking reports that the former striker had to calm the disappointed goalkeeper after being left out. Onana, the 27-year-old former Ajax Amsterdam star, hinted at having concerns but refrained from elaborating, citing the ongoing competition.

Speaking to Canal Plus, Onana said, "I have a lot to say, but I won't say it here because we are in competition. The most important thing is sacred union. We are here to win the AFCON. I ask the supporters to support us in good times and bad. I am one of the leaders, so I take my responsibilities, and that is why I am here."

Addressing queries about his commitments to both club and country, Onana emphasized that his country takes precedence. Cameroon's coach, Rigobert Song, clarified why Onana didn't play in the 1-1 draw against Guinea, noting his early morning arrival, making it impractical for him to participate.

Having played for Manchester United on Sunday, Onana encountered challenges securing another flight to Yamoussoukro, leading him to travel by road. Onana's situation and statements have injected an intriguing element into Cameroon's AFCON campaign, leaving fans curious about how it will unfold in the upcoming matches."
