In a surprise move, Ghana's national team coach, Otto Addo, has dropped team captain Andre Ayew from the Black Stars squad for the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
The 34-year-old midfielder, who has been a stalwart for the national team, was left out of the squad announced on Wednesday for the matches against Mali and the Central African Republic.
The Black Stars will face Mali on June 6 at Stade 26 Mars in Bamako before hosting the Central African Republic at the Baba Yara Stadium on June 10.
Despite enjoying a decent season with French club La Havre, Ayew's omission from the squad has sent shockwaves through the football fraternity in Ghana.
The Black Stars started the qualifying campaign with a win and a defeat, beating Madagascar 1-0 before losing narrowly to Comoros. They currently sit fourth in Group I.
The team will begin their training camp on Thursday at the University of Ghana Stadium in Legon, with Ayew's absence likely to be felt.
This development has sparked debate among football fans in Ghana, with many questioning the decision to drop the experienced midfielder.
