The 95th Annual Academy Awards took place over the weekend at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles in honour of movies that came out in the past year and saw a host of celebrity actors and actresses in attendance. Also in attendance were celebrity musicians including A$ap Rocky and Rihanna who delivered a dazzling performance of her song Lift Me Up from the 2nd installment of the Black Panther movie, Wakanda Forever.
This has been her first live performance since her iconic appearance at the Super Bowl Halftime show earlier this year and her first Oscar nomination. Her song Lift Me Up was nominated for Best Original Song along with Lady Gaga’s Hold My Hand from Tom Cruises Top Gun: Maverick, This Is a Life from Everything Everywhere All at Once, Applause from Tell It like a Woman and Naatu Naatu from RRR which won the award.
Director of Black Panther Ryan
Coogler shared his thoughts on Rihanna stating that she was a perfect fit for
the job citing her experience with motherhood as one of the deciding factors.
According to him, that was what led him to convince her to take the job.
Composer Ludwig Göransson also spoke
on hearing Rihanna for the first time in the studio in six years and how much
conviction and softness there was in her sound that enabled her to take the
chorus of the song to a new level. “After three weeks of meticulously fine-tuning
every word, the feeling and melody line that Rihanna added to the chorus was a
feeling of timelessness. It felt like the past, present and future all came
together at the same time” he said.
