Famous American filmmaker, Shelton Jackson, popularly known as Spike Lee arrived in Ghana to take part in the Year of Return and Beyond the Return initiatives of the Ghana Tourism Authority. This program aims to encourage the descendants of Africans to return to Africa and connect with their heritage.
Upon his arrival, Lee was greeted by the CEO of the Ghana Tourism Authority, Akwasi Agyeman and the Director of Beyond The Return secretariat, Annabelle Renee. Renee was thrilled to welcome Lee to Ghana, stating that it was great to see more African Americans connecting with their roots in Africa.
It is not yet clear what Lee's schedule will be while in Ghana or Africa. However, it is noteworthy that his visit coincides with that of American Vice President Kamala Harris, who is also touring Africa, starting with Ghana. In February, another Hollywood star, Idris Elba, visited Ghana and expressed his intention to establish film studios in West Africa, starting with Ghana, to attract international investors to the continent.
Lee's visit is significant, as he is known for his portrayal of the African American experience in his films. His visit to Ghana is an opportunity for him to connect with his African roots and gain inspiration for future projects. It is also a testament to the growing interest in Africa by people of African descent, as more celebrities and individuals continue to visit the continent to explore their heritage and contribute to its development.
