Spotify Adds Direct Messaging to Platform, Redefining Music Sharing

Spotify is rolling out a new in-app messaging feature, called Messages, designed to let users share and discuss songs, podcasts, and audiobooks directly within the app. The feature is currently launching on mobile platforms in select markets, available to both Free and Premium users aged 16 and older. 

Accessible via the Now Playing screen’s share icon, users can send content to friends with whom they’ve previously interacted through Spotify such as those on shared Family or Duo plans, or collaborators in Jams, Blends, and playlists. Once a recipient accepts a message request, the conversation opens up with options for text, emoji reactions, and seamless content back-and-forth sharing. All shared content gets saved in a dedicated Messages inbox, accessible from the profile icon. 

Security and privacy are emphasized. Messages are protected with industry-standard encryption, although not fully end-to-end encrypted. Users can manage their message experience by approving or rejecting requests, blocking contacts, or opting out entirely. The platform also employs proactive scanning and moderation to detect harmful or policy-breaking content.

Spotify positions Messages not as a replacement for external messaging apps like WhatsApp or Instagram, but as a complementary tool to streamline music sharing. The company hopes the new feature will boost in-app engagement and support artist discovery. Notably, Spotify had previously offered a similar messaging feature but discontinued it in 2017 due to low usage; this new rollout reflects the company’s expanded user base and renewed strategic interest.
