NASA astronauts Barry “Butch” Wilmore and Sunita “Suni” Williams have returned to Earth following an extended mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS). Originally scheduled for a brief stay, their mission was prolonged to over nine months due to technical issues with Boeing’s Starliner capsule.
The astronauts departed the ISS aboard SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft, undocking at 1:05 a.m. ET on March 18th, 2025. They were accompanied by NASA astronaut Nick Hague and Roscosmos cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov, who completed a standard six-month mission. The crew is expected to splash down off the coast of Florida around 5:57 p.m. ET.
During their extended stay, Wilmore and Williams conducted numerous experiments, performed maintenance tasks, and participated in nine spacewalks. Their prolonged mission garnered public interest and political commentary, with figures like former President Trump and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk criticizing the delays.
Upon return, the astronauts will undergo medical evaluations to assess the effects of prolonged weightlessness, such as bone density loss and fluid redistribution. They will also participate in a 45-day recovery program focusing on exercise and health monitoring.
This mission underscores the challenges and unpredictability of human space exploration, highlighting the resilience and adaptability of astronauts facing unforeseen circumstances.
