Eighteen-year-old Australian sprinter, Gout Gout, has announced himself on the global athletics stage in emphatic fashion, clocking a historic 19.67 seconds in the 200 metres to set a new world under-20 record.
The remarkable performance came at the Australian Championships in Sydney, where Gout delivered a blistering run under legal wind conditions (+1.7 m/s), ensuring the mark stands for official ratification. In doing so, he eclipsed the previous under-20 record of 19.69 seconds set by Erriyon Knighton, further cementing his status as one of the brightest young talents in world athletics.
Gout’s time is particularly significant not only for breaking the junior world record but also for placing him among the fastest men in the world regardless of age. The sub-20-second barrier in the 200m is a benchmark of elite sprinting, and achieving it at just 18 years old underscores his extraordinary potential.
Comparisons have already begun to surface between Gout and sprint legend Usain Bolt. Notably, Gout’s 19.67 surpasses what Bolt had achieved at the same age, adding further weight to the growing excitement around the young Australian’s future in the sport.
Beyond the raw numbers, the performance signals the arrival of a new force in global sprinting. With his combination of speed, composure and rapid progression, Gout is expected to become a major contender on the international circuit in the coming years.
