Parliament has passed the the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill—also known as the anti-LGBTQ bill, after months of intense national discussion and international scrutiny.
The bill also known as the anti-LGBTQ+ bill is sponsored by group of MPs from both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), aims to criminalize LGBTQ+ activism, activities, and the promotion of what it refers to as non-conventional sexual interactions and family values.
Its ratification represents one of the most contentious legislative moments in Ghana's recent democratic history, garnering criticism from human rights organizations and segments of the international community in addition to significant backing from conservative and religious groups.
The bill includes fines for same-sex relationships and sanctions for individuals or organizations that are alleged to support, fund, or promote LGBTQ+ activities, among others.
The legislation's proponents contend that it is essential to uphold Ghanaian family, religious, and cultural values.
During parliamentary discussions, a number of religious organizations and traditional leaders publicly supported the measure, claiming that it represents the moral convictions of the majority of Ghanaians.
Critics have warned that the bill may jeopardize fundamental rights, such as the freedom of speech, the ability to form an association, and the right to be free from discrimination.
