Ghana To Roll Out Digital Traffic Enforcement System From September

Motorists in Ghana will no longer face routine roadside checks by Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) personnel for more than 47 traffic offences starting September 2026, Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak has announced.

The government is introducing a digital enforcement system under the Traffitech-GH programme. Cameras and digital devices—including fixed, mobile, in-vehicle, handheld and radar systems—will automatically capture violations such as speeding and other infractions. Police will review the footage in a central control room before sending electronic notices to offenders’ phones. These notices will detail the offence, the applicable penalty and payment instructions.

Addressing a press briefing in Accra on Monday, Mr Mohammed-Mubarak said the change forms part of efforts to modernise traffic enforcement and reduce direct contact between motorists and police officers. Officers will no longer stop vehicles to check driving licences, seatbelts or insurance for the offences covered by the system.

The minister linked the move to wider digitalisation in the Ministry of the Interior, noting that it should also reduce opportunities for corruption that sometimes arise during face-to-face encounters. He cited examples of small informal payments that had previously allowed some motorists to avoid formal prosecution.

The Traffitech-GH system, developed by the Ghana Police Service in collaboration with other agencies, uses cameras and sensors to record evidence of traffic violations automatically.

It builds on earlier pilot work and legislative preparations earlier in 2026 aimed at improving road safety and compliance.
