Prez. Mahama Urges Ghanaians To Register Early For Saglemi Homes

President John Dramani Mahama has encouraged Ghanaians to register promptly for housing units under the revived Saglemi Housing Project once the sales portal opens, warning that demand is expected to be high.

The President made the call on Thursday, August 20, 2026, after inspecting the long-stalled affordable housing estate in the Greater Accra Region.

Following the visit, the president entreated citizens to patronize the houses in time.

“I want to encourage Ghanaians to register as soon as the sales portal opens because these houses will be in high demand,” he said.

Developer LMI Holdings has committed to completing the first 700 units by March 2027, with the initial phase of 1,500 units targeted for completion by December 2027.

Mahama expressed hope that the first batch could be commissioned around Easter 2027 and handed over to homeowners, with the remaining units in the phase following later that year.

The Saglemi project was originally conceived as a 5,000-unit affordable housing estate under the late President John Evans Atta Mills. It stalled after a change in government amid legal and investigative processes. Prolonged inactivity left the site vulnerable to vandalism, with electrical cables, fittings, wash basins and other materials reportedly removed.

Government later opted for a private-sector partnership, selecting LMI Holdings to redevelop the site. Mahama said the arrangement aims to transform the estate into a modern residential community for Ghanaian families, particularly given its location in a growing industrial corridor near Tema and Dawa. Work on the remaining 3,500 units is expected to begin after the first phase.

LMI Group Chief Executive Officer Kojo Aduhene reaffirmed the timelines during the inspection, noting that construction is progressing with materials secured, site clearing underway and underground electrical cabling being installed. Supporting infrastructure, including a reliable water supply from a treatment facility at Dawa, fibre-optic internet connectivity and potential transport links, is also being developed.

“We’re doing all the underground cabling, clearing the weeds, and water will not be a problem because we’ve got a water plant ready in the Dawa Industrial Area and it’s enough to supply water for all the units,” Mr Aduhene said.

Mahama linked the project to broader government efforts to expand affordable housing supply and ease the burden of high rent advances. He indicated that a major national housing programme would be announced by the Finance Minister in the next budget, with GH¢500 million already allocated to a District Housing Scheme.

The Saglemi Housing Project is part of ongoing attempts to address Ghana’s housing deficit through public-private collaboration.
